Ok, so a new version of WordPress has been unleashed. Well, only a WordPress upgrade in theory, but it will definitely patch some holes up in preparation for WordPress 2.9's release.

Ok, so a new version of WordPress has been unleashed. Well, only a WordPress upgrade in theory, but it will definitely patch some holes up in preparation for WordPress 2.9′s release.

To quote the announcement for this WordPress upgrade:

As you know over the past couple of months we have been working on the new features for WordPress 2.9. We have also been working on trying to make WordPress as secure as possible and during this process we have identified a number of security hardening changes that we thought were worth back-porting to the 2.8 branch so as to get these improvements out there and make all your sites as secure as possible.

The headline changes in this release are:

A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.

Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.

Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.

Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.

We would recommend that all sites are upgraded to this new version of WordPress to ensure that you have the best available protection.

So,who wouldnt want to upgrade if this is, mainly a security upgrade? I know who. Those who arent all that flash with WordPress. I mean, things can go wrong, what if I mess things up? I dont even know what I am doing! Simple answer to these people is this. Backup your wordpress, then follow the tutorial that I have posted below. It will do you the world of good, and prepare you for what to expect when the big upgrade happens when 2.9 is released!

WordPress is an easy blog and CMS system to install manually, for those who have done it a few times before. For those who havent had the chance to do this, it is quite a daunting task.

This tutorial covers a manual installation from the ground up using c-panel to create the mySQL database, and also covers how to edit the wp-config file. In another tutorial that is coming up soon, I will cover the basics on how to change directory permissions (CHMOD) which will allow other functions such as installing of templates and plugins from the admin panel, and editing of raw code from the back end. Good luck!

Setting up a blog, or a website should be an easy thing to do for everybody, as we are heading into a digital age, and having an online presence is just as vital as having an offline presence.

This is a very basic tutorial which will teach someone how to install WordPress starting from the ground up. This tutorial will only benefit those who have VPS or Dedicated hosting who are using WHM and C-panel with the Fantastico add on. For those who only use C-panel, this will give you the idea of what to do from about 1/3 of the way in. Good luck!
